Desc: Wild Horses, Unconquered People: Directed by Susan Smitten. For the Xeni Gwet'in First Nation, the wild horses that roam B.C.'s remote Nemaiah Valley are a powerful symbol of their fight for freedom. These untamed horses represent both an economic and spiritual resource - symbolic of the unconquered land they roam. But the existence of the wild horses and the Xeni Gwet'in culture are threatened by clear-cut logging in the region. Wild Horses, Unconquered People weaves together an intricate story that encompasses the horses, the science behind their peculiar genetic heritage and their remarkable connection to the First Nations people who share the region in which they thrive. Chief Roger William leads a challenge that pits his people against local ranchers, logging companies and the B.C. government. He employs everything from oral history and written records from the early 19th century, to modern research and DNA testing to assist his struggle.
